Amantadine HCL Tablets are a drug used to treat symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease or similar conditions. It’s also used to treat certain side effects caused by drugs or chemicals (drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms). Amantadine is sometimes used to treat or prevent influenza A (seasonal flu).
Amantadine HCL is classified as an adamantane. Though its mechanism of action is unknown, it is thought to work by increasing dopamine levels.

Precautions
Do NOT use Amantadine HCL Tablets if:
- You are allergic or hypersensitive to any of the ingredients.
- You have had a nasal flu vaccine within the last 2 weeks, or play to have one in the next 2 days.
- You have severe kidney disease.
This medication may not be suitable for people with certain conditions, including:
- liver or kidney disease
- daytime drowsiness
- congestive heart failure
- eczema
- glaucoma
- a history of seizures
- alcoholism or drug addiction
- a history of mental illness, psychosis, or suicidal thoughts/actions

Many drugs are known to interact with Amantadine HCL, including acetazolamide, antihistamines, dichlorphenamide, stimulants, methazolamide, quinine, quinidine, sodium bicarbonate, or thioridazine. It is also known to interact with certain medicines used to treat mental illness, motion sickness, sleep, or urinary issues.
Do not drink alcohol while undergoing treatment with this medicine. Avoid driving until the effects of the medicine are clear.
Uses
What is Amantadine used for?
It’s used to treat the symptoms of Parkinsonism or extrapyramidal side effects caused by certain drugs. It’s sometimes used to treat or prevent influenza A.
How are Amantadine Tablets used?
This medication has been manufactured to be taken orally.
What dose should be taken?
For parkinsonism, the usual dose is 100mg, taken twice per day. The maximum dosage is 400mg per day.
For the treatment of extrapyramidal symptoms, the usual dose is 100mg, taken twice per day. The maximum dosage is 300mg per day.
For the prevention of influenza A, the usual dose is 100mg, taken prior or immediately upon exposure. To treat influenza A, the usual dose is 100mg, taken twice per day for 3-5 days.
Side Effects
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Amantadine HCL Tablets.
Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:
- dizziness
- falls
- dry mouth
- swelling
- insomnia
- nausea or constipation
Seek medical attention if the following develop:
- extreme drowsiness
- lightheadedness
- shortness of breath
- difficulty with urination
- changes in mood or mental state (such as depression, agitation, aggression)
- seizures
- severe nervous system reactions
Speak with your doctor if you have increased urges, such as for sexual activity or gambling.
