Calcitriol Softgel Capsules are used to treat overactive parathyroid glands (hyperparathyroidism) and metabolic bone disease in some patients with kidney failure. It is also used to treat calcium deficiency (hypocalcemia) in certain patients on dialysis or those with underactive parathyroid glands hypoparathyroidism.

Calcitriol is a hormone-activated synthetic form of vitamin D. Vitamin D helps regulate some types of minerals and the parathyroid hormone. Vitamin D is typically changed to its active form in the liver and kidneys.

Precautions

Do NOT use Calcitriol Softgel Capsules if:

  • You are allergic or hypersensitive to any of the ingredients.
  • You have high blood levels of either calcium or vitamin D.
  • You have had a hypersensitivity response to other forms of vitamin D.

Many drugs are known to interact with Calcitriol, including cholestyramine, digoxin, digitalis, ketoconazole, diuretics, some seizure medications, and certain steroids.

Uses

What is Calcitriol used for?

What dose should be taken?

The usual initial dose is 0.25mcg, taken once per day. For maintenance, the usual dose is 0.5-1mcg, taken once per day.

Side Effects

Stop treatment and seek medical attention if the following develop:

  • signs of an allergic reaction
  • dehydration
  • signs of high or low levels of calcium
